The Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research (DHFMR) Research Centers will be collaborative initiatives between research laboratories at Harvard Medical School and research centers or laboratories in the Gulf and Middle East region. DHFMR intends to support initiatives that will bring novel ideas and new approaches to medical and biomedical research. Proposed research activities may draw upon recent advances in the basic medical and biomedical sciences – including such fields as biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, molecular biology, and pharmacology – that provide new opportunities for alleviating human disease.
DHFMR Research Centers and Fellowship Awards will support initiatives and independent physician-scientists who are dedicated to basic or translational research – the two-way transfer between work at the laboratory bench and patient care. The awards to centers and to individuals are intended to give recipients the flexibility to explore fundamental scientific questions and to lead to a better understanding of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.

Research Center Eligibility Requirements
Collaborative Research Centers or Research Initiatives based at both Harvard Medical School and an academic, research-oriented institution in the Gulf and Middle East Region are eligible to receive funding for collaborative research programs. Under the guidance of the Dubai Harvard Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Committee, “host” centers at HMS will be paired with Middle East research centers with similar interests. These collaborative groups will make a joint application to the foundation for funding. The current level of research at each center should be at a stage that would benefit from a collaborative partnership and approach. The Foundation encourages applications from research centers and initiatives that demonstrate a pioneering approach to basic science research with a strong focus on developing translational research.

Research Fellowship Awards
DHMFR Research Fellowship Awards are designed to support young investigators of outstanding promise from the Gulf and Middle East Region whose work will focus on medical and biomedical research relevant to the advancement of human health. The Foundation intends to support pioneering research and the development of promising new technologies.
The awards are intended to provide support to young investigators or junior faculty at the beginning or early stages of their research career. It is hoped that the support provided by Foundation awards will encourage successful applicants to be innovative in their research endeavors, to publish their research findings and eventually to pursue additional sources of support. It is intended that the Research Award recipients will be matched with one of the Foundation’s Collaborative Research Centers.

Research Fellowship Award Candidate Eligibility Requirements
The Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research Fellowship Awards are open to individuals with a MD, a PhD or a MD/PhD in health related or biomedical sciences. Successful candidates will have demonstrated outstanding performance during their education and training, and will have exhibited promise as contributors in science relevant to human health. The Foundation will favor proposals and applications that demonstrate an innovative and creative approach to medical or biomedical research. Candidates should be researchers from the Region, who are working in the Region or considering returning to work in the Region.

Application Guidelines
Candidate Research Centers in the Gulf and Middle East Region and Candidates for Research Awards are invited to submit a Letter of Intent indicating their interest in the program as a preliminary step to responding to a formal Request For Applications. The Letter of Intent must include the following information:
- Name, address and contact information
- Specific research aims
- Background and significance of proposed research
- An outline of the proposed research plan and methods
Letters of Intent from Research Centers must be submitted by the current Center Director, and include a brief CV (not to exceed 2 pages) of each of the Center’s principal researchers.
Letters of Intent from Research Award Candidates must include a brief CV (not to exceed 2 pages).
Candidates for Fellowship Awards must be less than 40 years old on September 1, 2007.
Based upon an evaluation of the Letter of Intent by the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research Scientific Advisory Committee, five (5) candidate Research Center Directors and five (5) Research Fellowship Award applicants will be invited by April 17th to attend a 2-day conference, Partners in Research, at Harvard Medical School in Boston on Thursday and Friday May 10th –11th, 2007.
Details concerning the formation of collaborative research programs with laboratories of Harvard Medical School, the Research Fellowship Awards, the formal Request for Application (RFA) process and available funding will be announced and discussed at the conference.
